With a dozen senior players currently unavailable, Swindon Town may be forced to look towards the free agent market to bolster Ian Holloway's depleted ranks.

Swindon Town find themselves in a challenging position as an ongoing injury crisis continues to leave the squad stretched thin. The club’s recent fixture against Rochdale highlighted the severity of the situation, with Ian Holloway forced to navigate the match without 12 senior players, seven of whom are currently facing long-term recovery processes.

While Swindon possess a sizeable playing staff on paper, the recurring unavailability of key personnel has severely hampered preparations. Holloway has been forced to select his starting line-ups based on match fitness rather than tactical preference, leaving the squad particularly vulnerable in midfield and without natural width.

Despite these difficulties, the prospect of signing free agents remains complicated by the club’s current Salary Cost Management Protocol calculations. However, if the current trend of injuries shows no sign of abating, the club may find its hand forced ahead of the January transfer window.

Potential reinforcements and familiar faces

Integrating new players into a squad mid-season presents significant challenges, particularly regarding tactical cohesion and understanding the existing team culture. Consequently, the club may prioritise individuals who already possess a familiarity with the setup at the Nigel Eady County Ground.

Ayman Benarous remains a candidate after impressing during a trial period over the summer. While a shoulder injury prevented a contract from being finalised at the time, his ability to integrate quickly on the wing was well-regarded. Similarly, midfielder Josh Benson is known to Holloway, having been under consideration previously. Given the fitness concerns surrounding existing midfielders like Ollie Clarke, Matty Virtue and Tom Nichols, Benson could re-emerge as a viable option.

Other potential targets with previous links to the club include:

Diallang Jaiyesimi: A player who enjoyed a successful previous spell at the club, offering potential creativity and invention in wide areas.

Ronan Darcy: A consistent performer at League Two level whose energetic playing style aligns with the team’s required pressing ethos.

Exploring the wider market

Beyond those with prior ties to Swindon, several other free agents are currently without clubs. Evan Khouri, who previously worked under Holloway during their time at Grimsby Town, is noted for the level of energy the manager often demands. Additionally, Carlos Mendes Gomez remains available, potentially offering an 'X-factor' out wide having previously demonstrated goal-scoring prowess at this level.

If the club determines that the current workload on existing forward Aaron Drinan needs to be reduced, experienced striker Freddie Ladapo remains an available option. While his style of play differs from the intense pressing often utilised by the side, he continues to offer a physical presence in the final third.

For now, the focus for Swindon Town remains on managing the fitness of the existing squad, but the list of available free agents provides a clear path should the board decide to intervene in the market before the turn of the year.
