Swindon Town FC grapple with defensive injury crisis
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Swindon Town must look to internal options to bolster their back line as a series of injuries hits the squad, with loanee Filozofe Mabete confirmed as unavailable for a return.
Swindon Town are facing a significant challenge in their defensive line following a spate of injuries that will leave the squad stretched for the coming weeks. The club is currently navigating a period of uncertainty as they look to maintain the tactical progress made in recent fixtures.
The defensive stability that helped Swindon secure five points from their last three matches against high-flying opponents has been disrupted. Sam Inwood is set for a spell on the sidelines after sustaining a Grade 2 hamstring tear, an injury expected to keep him out of action for five to six weeks. He is joined in the treatment room by Ollie Clarke, who is dealing with a similar hamstring issue, while Ryan Tafazolli remains sidelined for a few more weeks.
These absences leave manager Ian Holloway with limited natural cover for the back three system currently employed. While Kaelan Majekodunmi and Stephan Negru are available as natural central defenders, the remaining options require tactical adaptation. Billy Kirkman provides an option at the back, though his potential deployment there impacts the team's balance at wing-back. James Ball, more accustomed to midfield, and James Debayo represent further internal candidates who could be tasked with defensive duties.
Regarding the possibility of recalling Filozofe Mabete from his loan spell at Forest Green Rovers, it has been confirmed that there is no clause in his agreement to bring him back to the County Ground before January. Mabete has been gaining valuable experience and recently earned a place in the National League Team of the Week, and the club's hierarchy believes continuing his development away from Swindon is the correct path.
With the squad depth currently under pressure, Holloway is looking to the versatility of his remaining players to bridge the gap. Debayo, who has spent much of his time at Swindon in midfield or at right-back, may emerge as a key figure if he can successfully transition back to a centre-back role. As the team prepares for upcoming challenges, the focus remains on utilising the current squad to maintain a competitive edge during this injury-hit period.
