Swindon Town winless streak extends to five games following Crewe defeat

Swindon Town suffered a 1-0 home defeat against Crewe Alexandra, extending their difficult run of form to five league matches without a victory.
Swindon Town's winless streak reached five matches after a frustrating 1-0 defeat to Crewe Alexandra at the County Ground. Despite showing signs of defensive discipline and attempting to utilise width through their full-backs, the home side were unable to break their current spell of poor form.
Manager Ian Holloway welcomed back several players to his starting XI, with Mitch Clark and Sam Inwood returning to the fold, alongside Ollie Clarke in midfield. These changes allowed Swindon to maintain a degree of control during the opening exchanges, with the team looking to get Dan Butler and Mitch Clark into advanced positions on the flanks. Clark’s long throws, a tactic frequently employed throughout the match, caused occasional chaos in the Crewe penalty area, though the home side could not capitalise on the resulting scrambles.
The first half was a scrappy affair typical of League Two, with neither side producing a shot on target before the interval. Swindon looked the more likely to force an opening, as they dominated the midfield battle and limited the impact of Crewe's attacking quartet. A notable chance saw Aaron Drinan head an effort at goal following a cross from Jack Thomson, but Crewe goalkeeper Tom Booth was equal to the attempt.
The game turned just before the hour mark when Crewe refreshed their attacking options with a triple substitution. Shortly after, the visitors capitalised on a lapse, with Jordan Gibson finding the corner of the net after a cut-back from Josh March. While the goal was perhaps against the run of play, it underscored the clinical difference between the two sides on the day.
Holloway responded by introducing Joe Snowdon, Matty Virtue, and Louis Millard in an effort to inject urgency into his side. Whilst the substitutes added fresh energy and nearly created an opening for Snowdon, Swindon struggled to break down a resilient and well-organised Crewe defence.
The result leaves Swindon Town under continued pressure as they look to turn around a season that has struggled to gain momentum. With a challenging schedule ahead, including matches against other undefeated sides and a trip to Bristol Rovers, the need for increased composure and attacking creativity remains a priority for the squad.
