The Bespoke Guardians Swindon Wildcats head to the Planet Ice Skydome this weekend aiming to secure their first-ever league and playoff double.
The Bespoke Guardians Swindon Wildcats are set to descend on Coventry this weekend, aiming to cement a record-breaking season by adding the NIHL playoff title to their recent league championship. Having already secured their first league title in over 20 years, player-manager Aaron Nell believes his squad is hitting their stride at the perfect time for the 20th edition of the Final Four.
This campaign has marked a significant period of progress for the Wildcats, who have now reached the Final Four stage for three consecutive years. After a dominant regular season, the team navigated their playoff campaign with success, winning five of their six fixtures. Their only defeat during the playoffs came in a 5-4 away loss to the Sheffield Steeldogs.
Reflecting on the team's preparation, Aaron Nell noted that the early securing of the league title allowed the squad to adjust their focus towards the post-season intensity. He emphasised that the current goal is to ensure the players peak for the upcoming semi-final clash against the Hull Seahawks.
The semi-final match, scheduled for 18 April, presents a distinct challenge. While the Wildcats bring significant experience to the Planet Ice Skydome Arena, their opponents, the Hull Seahawks, are making their first appearance at the Final Four. Nell acknowledged the confidence of their opposition but insisted that his side is looking to improve upon their performances from the previous two years at the event.
The manager expressed gratitude for the backing received throughout the season, noting that the strong support from the stands has been a vital component of the team's momentum. With tickets for the event sold out, the atmosphere in Coventry is expected to be electric as Swindon fans hope to see their side progress to the final on 19 April.
The other semi-final pairing will see the Leeds Knights face the Sheffield Steeldogs. The outcome of these two matches will determine which teams progress to Sunday's final, where the Wildcats hope to complete a historic double that would define their season.
