Plans progress for new Trowbridge retail crime partnership
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Local businesses and authorities are exploring the creation of a new crime-fighting partnership to tackle shoplifting and anti-social behaviour in Trowbridge.
Trowbridge could soon see a tougher approach to town centre crime as discussions advance to establish a new Business Crime Reduction Partnership (BCRP). If finalised, the scheme would mark the second of its kind in Wiltshire, following the existing partnership in Salisbury.
Police and Crime Commissioner Philip Wilkinson has confirmed there is strong interest from local organisations in the town. The proposed initiative aims to provide a structured framework for businesses, the police and other agencies to share intelligence and coordinate their response to retail theft and anti-social behaviour.
The move comes at a time of heightened concern regarding safety in the town centre. Recent figures revealed that 120 shoplifting offences were reported in Trowbridge during August alone. The town has already taken steps to address these issues, including the appointment of a dedicated retail crime officer.
Mr Wilkinson highlighted the broader impact that such crime has on the local community. He stated that business crime affects livelihoods, undermines commercial confidence and can make people feel less safe when visiting local shops. He stressed that a BCRP would not replace existing efforts, such as those led by the Chamber of Commerce and ShopWatch, but would instead provide a more unified and effective approach to tackling persistent offenders.
Carey Tesler, chairman of the Trowbridge Chamber of Commerce, acknowledged the challenges currently facing high streets across the country. She welcomed the potential for a BCRP, noting the clear need for ongoing cooperation between businesses and the police to combat the rise in anti-social behaviour.
While discussions remain at an early stage, the project received a positive reception at the recent West Wiltshire Business Expo. If the partnership is successfully established, it is intended to create a more secure environment for shoppers, residents and those running businesses in the town centre.
