Mortimer Street in Trowbridge will remain closed until at least November 6 after delays in essential utility works, with Wiltshire Council exploring a potential early one-way reopening.

Commuters and businesses in Trowbridge face further travel disruption after Wiltshire Council confirmed that the closure of Mortimer Street will be extended by over a month. The route, which had been scheduled to reopen on 2 October, is now expected to remain off-limits until at least 6 November.

The closure is part of the ongoing Longfield Gyratory improvement scheme, a project designed to enhance traffic capacity and improve access to the town's leisure centre. While the council noted that substantial progress has been made, including carriageway widening and the installation of new traffic signals, essential utility diversion work has fallen behind the original schedule.

David Bullock, the council's director of assets, highways and transport, apologised for the delay and the subsequent inconvenience caused to local residents and businesses. He stated that the authority is working closely with contractors and utility companies to complete the remaining tasks as quickly as possible.

Despite the official extension until 6 November, the council has indicated that it may be possible to reopen the road to one-way traffic before that date. This interim measure would allow vehicles to access Mortimer Street from the Longfield Gyratory while final elements of the construction project are concluded. The council confirmed it will continue to monitor safety and progress on-site and will provide further updates as the situation develops.
