A 71-year-old man has entered not guilty pleas to charges related to a fatal collision on the A36 near Knook last year.

A pensioner from Wiltshire has appeared in court to deny causing the deaths of three scooter riders in a collision on the A36. Hugh Campion, 71, of Upton Scudamore, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on 16 September to face a series of charges relating to the incident, which occurred at Knook on 31 May 2025.

The collision involved a Toyota Prius driven by Mr Campion and a group of Vespa riders travelling in the opposite direction. The group had been on a journey towards the Normandy beaches in France at the time of the tragedy.

Robert Best, 62, was confirmed to have died at the scene. Two other riders, 64-year-old Marie Jones and 62-year-old Timothy Davies, later passed away in hospital following the collision. Another individual, Gary Jones, sustained serious injuries in the same incident.

During the hearing at Salisbury Crown Court, Mr Campion entered not guilty pleas to three charges of causing death by dangerous driving. He also denied three alternative charges of causing death by careless driving. Furthermore, the defendant pleaded not guilty to causing serious injury to Gary Jones by dangerous driving, and to the alternative charge of causing injury by careless driving.

Judge Rufus Taylor has directed that the case will proceed to trial, which is estimated to last up to 10 days. The trial is currently scheduled to commence on 1 June 2026. A pre-trial review hearing has been set for 30 April 2026. Mr Campion has been released on unconditional bail until his next appearance.
