Heddington community open mic night marks 15th session

A monthly community-led open mic night in Heddington is celebrating its 15th session, offering a supportive space for local performers and residents to connect.
A Wiltshire village has reached a new milestone in its local music scene, as the Heddington and Stockley Open Mic Night celebrates its 15th session. The event, which has become a staple of village life, offers a platform for musicians, poets, and comedians of all abilities to perform in a relaxed, non-competitive environment.
Launched in July 2025 by local resident David Songhurst, the initiative was born from a residents' meeting with the aim of providing a creative outlet and free entertainment for the community. The evenings typically take place on the third Friday of each month at Heddington Village Hall, running from 7pm to 10pm.
Organisers emphasise that the event is designed for fun rather than competition. A spokesperson for the group stated: "This is not The X-Factor, it is for fun. If you can perform anything in front of other people, you are a winner already. It takes guts, we all know that."
The event has attracted a diverse array of talent, ranging from experienced local musicians to children performing for their first time. According to organisers, the supportive atmosphere has provided a significant confidence boost for participants. The organisers provide full-size keyboards, microphones, and amplifiers for those who need them, and there is no requirement to sign up in advance.
While the sessions are currently hosted at the Village Hall, organisers are looking to the future as the village undergoes a significant change. The historic 17th-century Ivy pub, which closed in early 2024, is currently being renovated after being purchased by the local community. There are hopes to relocate the open mic events to the pub or its garden once it reopens in spring 2027.
