Wiltshire Council is marking National Fitness Day with free gym access, health checks, and a countywide one-mile challenge for residents.
Wiltshire Council is encouraging residents to improve their health and wellbeing as part of this year's National Fitness Day, taking place on Wednesday, 16 September. The local authority is opening its council-run leisure facilities to the public, offering free gym access and professional health assessments to help locals take the first step towards a more active lifestyle.
As part of the initiative, the council has launched a countywide one-mile challenge. Residents are invited to complete a distance of one mile in whatever way they find most engaging, whether that is on a treadmill, exercise bike, cross trainer, rowing machine, or by swimming lengths in the pool.
Mel Jacob, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for communities, engagement, and corporate services, highlighted the importance of the day in supporting physical health. She noted that taking that initial step towards fitness can often be the most difficult hurdle, and the council hopes that providing a welcoming, supportive environment will encourage more people to experience the benefits of being active.
For those interested in a more comprehensive overview of their health, the council is also providing free health checks. These assessments include measurements for blood pressure, resting heart rate, height, and weight, alongside professional lifestyle consultations. As an added incentive, any non-member who books one of these health checks will also be granted a free seven-day pass to their local leisure centre.
Access to these facilities is straightforward for non-members. To use the gym equipment free of charge, residents simply need to complete a waiver form upon their arrival at their local centre. With a wide range of facilities across the county participating, the council is aiming to make this an inclusive day for all members of the community, regardless of their current fitness level.
