Wiltshire Police addresses surge in summer incidents and officer wellbeing
By Swindon Now Editorial Team · Published

Wiltshire Police’s Deputy Chief Constable has addressed public concerns following a high volume of serious incidents across the county over the summer.
Wiltshire Police has provided reassurance to the public following a summer period that saw an elevated number of serious incidents, including multiple fatalities and major criminal investigations. Over the past few months, the force has responded to a series of high-profile cases across Swindon and the wider county, leading to questions about the pressure placed on local resources and the wellbeing of serving officers.
Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper sat down to discuss the challenges faced by the force, clarifying that while the recent succession of tragedies may appear concerning, the actual volume of incidents does not indicate a breakdown in community safety. He emphasised that the force manages these situations as they arise, whilst acknowledging the significant emotional toll that attending such traumatic scenes takes on police personnel.
Supporting those on the front line
Addressing the impact on officers, DCC Cooper highlighted the robust support systems currently in place to manage the trauma associated with emergency response work. He noted that regular exposure to tragic circumstances is an unavoidable reality of policing, making the provision of mental health and wellbeing support a critical priority for the organisation.
Support measures currently utilised by Wiltshire Police include:
Access to occupational health services and specialised healthcare professionals.
Peer support through the Trauma Risk Management (TRIM) process.
Staff support networks designed to provide guidance during and after difficult operations.
Risk-assessed medical reviews for staff involved in particularly distressing incidents.
The Deputy Chief Constable stated that the force treats the mental health of its workforce with the same seriousness as its operational duties. He noted that support is extended not only to those on the front line but also to back-office staff who deal with the high demand of these investigations.
Reflecting on a challenging season
The summer months were marked by a wide range of emergency responses, from fatal road traffic collisions to complex criminal investigations. Whilst the list of incidents was varied, police command maintain that the figures fall within the spectrum of expected demand over a long period. DCC Cooper took the opportunity to pass on his condolences to the families affected by the tragedies reported during this time.
He also praised the dedication of Wiltshire Police staff, who have worked to balance these large-scale enquiries with the day-to-day requirements of keeping the community safe. For the public, the message from the force remains one of stability, with reassurances that despite the intensity of the recent summer months, core policing services remain focused and supported.
